How to tailor your resume to a job description

Tailor your resume by identifying a role’s requirements, selecting relevant evidence from your experience, and making that evidence easy to find. Adjust the summary, skills and achievement bullets where appropriate. Use the employer’s terminology only when it accurately describes your work; do not add qualifications you cannot support.

1. Identify the actual requirements

Read responsibilities, required qualifications and preferred qualifications separately. List concrete requirements such as tools, tasks, credentials and languages. Keep a preferred skill separate from a mandatory license. Do not turn every word in the posting into a keyword to repeat.

For a fictional frontend role, the list might include React interfaces, accessible forms and AWS deployments. These are distinct requirements. React experience alone does not demonstrate deployment experience.

2. Find evidence before editing

For each requirement, identify a job, project or activity that demonstrates it. Note partial evidence separately. If a requirement is absent from your resume, decide whether you have truthful information to add or whether it remains a gap.

RequirementResume evidenceNext action
React interfacesA dashboard built in ReactDescribe your contribution.
Accessible formsKeyboard navigation and form-label workExplain what you implemented.
AWS deploymentsNo example foundConfirm experience; do not invent it.

3. Make vague bullets specific

Explain what you did, how you did it and, when supported, the result. Numbers help when meaningful and verifiable; do not fabricate percentages to make a bullet sound stronger.

Before: Worked on the frontend.

After: Built React form components with labeled inputs and keyboard navigation, and documented their behavior for the engineering team.

Why this helps: The revision makes relevant work explicit. Use this pattern only when the details describe your actual contribution.

4. Update the summary and skills selectively

Introduce relevant experience that you can support with examples. Keep the skills list consistent with your projects and work history. Do not add AWS just because the posting mentions it.

With Koncept Resume’s AI review, check the evidence and compare the original and draft wording before applying it. Clearer wording can explain existing experience; it cannot create a missing qualification.

5. Check the exported file

  • Verify employers, roles, dates and achievements.
  • Follow the employer’s requested file format.
  • Choose a readable layout such as Standard ATS when a simple single column suits your content.
  • Inspect every PDF page and copy text into a plain text editor to check its order.
  • Review application fields automatically filled from the file.

Formatting can affect extraction. Greenhouse documents issues with images, complex tables, columns and unclear sections. This supports checking your document; it does not establish a universal pass rate. Read Greenhouse’s parsing guidance.

Common questions

Should I copy the job description?

No. Use accurate terminology and explain your contribution in your own words. Repeating requirements without evidence does not demonstrate them.

Does tailoring guarantee an interview?

No. Requirements, applicant competition and screening processes vary. The aim is accurate communication of relevant experience.

What if I have no paid experience?

Use relevant projects, education or volunteering. Our first-resume guide explains how.
