How to write a resume with no work experience
You can write a first resume without paid employment by showing relevant projects, education, volunteering and other activities. Explain what you did and what you learned. Keep descriptions specific, choose evidence relevant to the application, and leave out claims you cannot support.

1. Collect evidence from your activities
Consider coursework, personal projects, student organizations, volunteering and other responsibilities. For each activity, note the task, your own contribution, the methods used and a result you can explain. You do not need to make an activity sound like a paid job.
A project built with classmates can demonstrate implementation and collaboration. Distinguish what you contributed from the team’s overall work.
2. Choose useful sections
- Contact: a professional email and appropriate contact details.
- Summary: a short factual introduction to relevant education, skills and interests.
- Education: qualification, institution and dates. Add relevant coursework when useful.
- Projects: the problem, your contribution and the tools used.
- Activities: accurately labeled volunteering, internships or other responsibilities.
- Skills: capabilities you can demonstrate or discuss.
Conventions vary by country and role. Follow the employer’s requested document type and information rather than assuming every application uses the same rules.
3. Describe a project clearly
Fictional project: Student society event registration portal.
Contribution: Built the React registration form, added clear labels and keyboard navigation, and wrote setup instructions for classmates.
Evidence: A concrete implementation task, accessibility work and documentation.
Include measured results only when supported. Do not claim thousands of users or revenue increases just to make a project sound impressive. A precise account of a small project is useful.
4. Write a factual introduction
A fictional graduate applying to a frontend role might write:
Computer science graduate with coursework and project experience in React and JavaScript. Built accessible form components for a student event portal and documented the setup for classmates. Interested in entry-level frontend development.
Adapt the structure to your actual qualification and work. Avoid claims such as “expert,” “proven leader” or “years of professional experience” when your examples do not support them.
5. Match the role and check the document
Choose the activities most relevant to the posting. Our tailoring guide explains how to map requirements to evidence. Do not hide a gap by changing a title or adding an unsupported skill.
Select a readable template, inspect the exported pages and check extracted text. Koncept Resume lets you edit and preview for free; PDF downloads require a paid plan. The Projects form gives projects their own place without pretending they were employment.
Common questions
Should I invent a job to fill the experience section?
No. Label projects and volunteering accurately. Leave irrelevant employment history empty.
Can AI write my first resume?
AI can suggest wording from information you supply, but cannot verify what you did. Review the AI draft and confirm each claim.
Must my first resume be exactly one page?
Prioritize relevant evidence and follow application instructions. Do not shrink text until it is difficult to read just to hit a page count.
